BMJ: 5 ways to reduce medical errors

In a recent BMJ study, the journal found medical errors were the third leading cause of death in the United States. The study authors give key recommendations to reduce medical errors in organizations, according to National Law Review.

Here are five ways:

1. Create a culture that makes patient safety a top priority. During meetings, have “prevention” as an item of discussion.

2. Implement a patient safety program with standard operating procedures and protocols.

3. Have a corrective action process in place if an error happens.

4. Patients should play a part in the decision-making process. Make sure patients fully understand Informed Consent.

5. Always update your protocols to lower future risk.
