6 strategies for securing patient health data

Here are six strategies for protecting patient health information, according to a report by EHR review site Software Advice called “HIPAA Breaches: Minimizing Risks and Patient Fears IndustryView | 2015.

1. Conduct a security risk analysis at least annually, preferably by a professional.

2. Implement software, such as an electronic health record system, and encrypt mobile devices.

3. Conduct staff training with annual HIPAA courses and quizzes.

4. Encourage patient communication through engaging non-physician providers and educational outreach.

5. Implement a breach response plan, which includes a notification timeline.

6. Update data security policies as risks emerge.
