12 Interesting Statistics From the VMG Health Endo Centers Financial and Operational Benchmark Study

This article briefly outlines 12 findings from the VMG Health Endo Centers Benchmarking Study. The study, together with the IMA Health Multi-Specialty Center Study, is an outstanding resource for ASCs.

1. The study was based on data from 37 endoscopy centers, representing 173,422 endoscopy-GI cases.

2. Nine of 37 centers had revenues in excess of $4 million.

3. Eleven of 37 centers performed more than 6,000. Sixteen did fewer than 3,000. Nineteen of the 37 had two or three ORs. ORs and procedures rooms were grouped together for the study.

4. Total payments for all ASCs were $2.8 billion in 2005. Ninety-seven facilities closed or merged in 2005. (Medpac June 2006; Healthcare Spending and Medicare Program.)

5. At the time of this study, there were approximately 4,610 Medicare-certified ASCs. Today, there are nearly 5,000. Of the 4,610, approximately 700 were single-specialty endoscopy centers.

6. The median amount of net revenues for endoscopy centers was approximately $2.2million. The median net EBITDA for endo centers was $933,000.

7. The median management fees were approximately $150,000 per year.

8. Median employees costs inclusive of salaries, wages, taxes and benefits equaled 27.5 percent of actual revenues.

9. Median accounts receivable days outstanding was 52.

10. Medicare and Medicaid comprised approximately 30 percent of charges.

11. The median number of cases was 3,691. The median percentage of cases performed by the top three physicians was 76 percent. Twenty-seven percent were performed by the top physician.

12. The average revenues per case collected was $593 per case. The median was $617 per case.
