The VA National Center for Patient Safety offers a free, downloadable spreadsheet that can be used to compute grams of alcohol product used per 1,000 patient days.

The template is intended to help healthcare providers assess use of alcohol-based hand rubs and compliance to hand hygiene practices. The VA notes that logging this data is a challenging but not unrealistic goal. It requires cooperation from a number of areas, such as nursing, supply, logistics and housekeeping. When used appropriately, however, this tool can help identify opportunities for patient care improvement.
