Orthofix to conduct rotator cuff repair study — 5 highlights

Orthofix commenced enrollment in a study on the use of pulsed electromagnetic field technology for rotator cuff repair. Here are five highlights:

1. PEMF therapy promotes bone growth and the healing of nonunion fractures, so researchers want to assess whether it can also lower the rates of repaired tendons tearing again.

2. Researchers also plan to note any correlation between PEMF treatments and muscle strength, range of motion and pain scores.

3. The study will evaluate the potential of Orthofix's RCStim device as an adjunctive treatment for full thickness rotator cuff tears.

4. This is Orthofix's second study evaluating the use of PEMF technology on soft tissue. "Ultimately, if results of these studies are positive, it could open the door to important new applications of this technology," said Orthofix Chief Scientific Officer James Ryaby, PhD.

5. Approximately 250,000 patients undergo rotator cuff surgery in the U.S. every year.
