Johnson & Johnson's DePuy Synthes launches self-shortening Dynacord suture — 5 insights

The limited U.S. launch of DePuy Synthes' Dynacord suture used for soft tissue repair is underway, Medical Design & Outsourcing reports.

Here are five insights:

1. The Dynacord suture is meant to prevent rotator cuff surgeries from failing due to loss of suture tension. Loss of suture tension causes gaps in the tissue or between the tissue and bone.

2. The Dynacord suture addresses the problem by shortening itself when tension is lost.

3. The product includes two outer sheaths of braided fibers and a core made of silicone and salt. The core helps the suture maintain a stable repair environment.

4. The salt within the suture's silicone core dissolves inside the body, leaving a porous structure in the silicone core. The pores fill with fluid, causing the braided sheath to expand and the suture to shorten.

5. The Dynacord suture is part of the DePuy Synthes Mitek Sports Medicine portfolio. Johnson & Johnson scheduled the suture's full U.S. launch for the third quarter of 2018.
