2. The Top Pain Doctor designation is awarded through a peer nomination process. More than 100,000 medical professionals submitted nominations for specialists across the U.S.

3. Castle Connolly's physician-led research team selected winners by evaluating each nominee's credentials, professional achievements and outcome data, along with other criteria.

5. Dr. Prunskis has devoted much of his career to reducing reliance on opioid medications for pain treatment and introduced a resolution that helped create the Illinois Prescription Drug Monitoring Program.

"Since Illinois Pain Institute was founded in 1992, we have had a passion to identify the source of the pain, fix it and reduce or eliminate the use of opiate narcotic medications," Dr. Prunskis said. "I humbly accept this award knowing that it was a team effort on the part of the over 75 physicians and staff at the Illinois Pain Institute."
