Orthopedics is among the most popular specialties for ASCs, with many patients turning to the facilities for outpatient procedures.

Alaska is the most expensive state to have a hip arthroscopy at an ASC, according to Sidecar Health's care calculator. 

In its final rule, CMS added 11 procedures to the ASC-covered list that were not included in the proposed rule, including total shoulder arthroplasty. 

Beginning Dec. 4, Hanover, Pa.-based WellSpan Health & Surgery Center will become the first ASC in the system to provide same-day total joint replacements for hips and knees.
