Orthopedic surgeon pay hits $500K, 3 more notes

Orthopedic surgeons have the third-highest median salary among specialties examined in the “Physician Compensation Report 2020” from Physicians Thrive, a financial planning company.

The report authors compiled data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Doximity, Merritt Hawkins, Medscape and Salary.com to develop the report.

Four notes on orthopedic surgeon pay:

1. Orthopedic surgeons reported a median salary of $500,000 and ranked No. 3 among highest compensated specialists surveyed for the report. Neurosurgeons were No. 1, with a median salary of $645,000, and cardiovascular surgeons were No. 2, with a median salary of $608,354.

2. Orthopedic surgeon salary increased 6 percent year over year in 2020.

3. The average signing bonus for orthopedic surgeons was $40,000.

4. The average incentive bonus for orthopedic surgeons was $96,000.
