Wyoming orthopedic practice data breach affects 56,197

Casper, Wyo.-based Casper Orthopedic Associates reported a notice of a data breach affecting 56,197 people.

On or about May 23, Casper discovered it was the victim of a cyberattack by an unauthorized party, according to a news release from the practice. The orthopedic practice launched an investigation with third-party cybersecurity experts and notified law enforcement. The breach was logged with HHS’ Office for Civil Rights on July 23.

The investigation concluded June 11 and determined that sensitive information may have been acquired from the practice’s systems. A review to identify affected individuals was completed Sept. 2, and notification letters were sent Sept. 8.

Information that may have been exposed varied by individual and included names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, driver’s license numbers, financial account information and medical information, the release said. 

Casper Orthopedic Associates is an independent orthopedic group that provides surgical and rehabilitative musculoskeletal care, according to its website.
