Ophthalmologists have the highest annual mean wage in outpatient care centers, according to new data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

In outpatient care centers, ophthalmologists earn an average of $414,630, more than $100,000 higher than the next highest-paying practice setting. 

Across all industries, ophthalmologists have a mean annual wage of $304,650.

The agency updated compensation data May 15 to reflect 2025 information, the latest available.

Here are the six highest-paying practice settings for ophthalmologists, along with the average annual salary for each:

  1. Outpatient care centers: $414,630
  2. Offices of physicians: $313,490
  3. General medical and surgical hospitals: $276,840
  4. Office of other healthcare practitioners: $255,020
  5. Colleges, universities and professional schools: $229,150
  6. Health and personal care retailers: $175,040
