The study timed 273 adult patients making nonprocedural visits to a glaucoma subspecialty practice at two weeks before the clinic launched its ER system, two weeks after it had and six months later. Although physicians spent slightly more time reviewing paper and electronic records and on clinical examinations, patient wait time percentages went slightly down, and no impact was measured on patients’ perception of the experience.
Authors of the study concluded the study, “supports the contention that EHR implementation can be accomplished in an ophthalmology practice without compromising the efficiency of or patient satisfaction with the clinical encounter.”
