PPACA Health Plans Now Cover Comprehensive Childhood Eye Exams

The American Academy of Ophthalmology is stressing the importance of pediatric eye exams, and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act's health exchanges plans now provide full coverage of childhood comprehensive eye exams.
At first, the PPACA would only provide child and adolescent vision screenings during well-child visits. However, the rule was changed to allow for glasses and contact lens exams to correct refractive errors. More than 50 percent of uninsured children have never had a well-child visit.

Children should receive visions screenings at well-child visits from birth until 3 year old and each year between 3 and 5 years old, followed by every one to two years after age 5, according to the AAO.
