Poor Ophthalmic Clinic Infection Control to Blame for Pink Eye Outbreaks

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have linked six unrelated outbreaks of pink eye to poor infection control practices in ophthalmology clinics, according to a MedPage Today report. Since 2008, just more than 400 people in Florida, Illinois, Minnesota and New Jersey has contracted epidemic keratoconjunctivitis linked to human adenovirus.

The CDC recommends doubling down the following efforts to maintain cleanliness:
•    Adhere to hand hygiene.
•    Furlough staff member with pink eye.
•    Disinfect ophthalmic instruments after each use or dispose of.
•    Use disposable gloves for any potential contact with eye secretions.
