6 things to know about the healthcare job market

Growth in the healthcare market rose from 204,000 jobs in 2013 to 312,000 jobs in 2014, according to the 2015 Healthcare Recruiting Trends Survey from HealtheCAREERS. Here are six things to know about the healthcare job market and employer perspective.

1. Healthcare is expected to contribute one in three new jobs over the next ten years. It is predicted the industry will contribute five million new positions by 2022.

2. Employers cite finding qualified candidates, finding qualified candidates quickly, finding enough candidates and location as a few of the top recruiting challenges.

3. The most difficult positions to fill over the coming years will be physician, registered nurse, physician assistant and nurse practitioner.

4. Employers said they are having the most difficulty filling physician roles in family medicine, psychiatry, internal medicine and dermatology.

5. Employers are using job boards to recruit candidates. Of those surveyed:

•    63 percent used HealtheCAREERS within the past year
•    49 percent used Indeed within the past year
•    31 percent used Craigslist within the past year
•    30 percent used CareerBuilder within the past year
•    26 percent used CareerMD within the past year

6. The impending physician and qualified healthcare worker shortage is driving employers to look at alternative methods of filling positions. Of the survey respondents:

•    45 percent do not use alternative strategies
•    30.1 percent turn to PAs or NPs to alleviate the strain of the physician shortage
•    20.5 percent utilize travel or per diem staff
•    8.9 percent turn to retired or near-retirement professionals
•    5.3 percent sponsor international healthcare candidates
•    5 percent are unsure
