Five details:
1. City Council and community members expressed concerns about traffic, safety and the building itself during an April City Council meeting. Hospital representatives responded by holding a series of additional meetings to discuss the project.
2. After local residents and authorities opposed creating new space for the ASC, hospital leaders decided to build it within the hospital’s main lobby area. The hospital also brought a consultant to City Council meetings to address parking and traffic concerns.
3. The updates from hospital representatives have helped get people on board with the project, according to City Council President John Falco. He told Wicked Local Medford that “there is a better comfort level now than there was a few months ago.”
4. The hospital plans to give council members another project update at the end of June.
5. The 16,000-square-foot ASC is a joint venture between Melrose (Mass.)-Wakefield Healthcare and Worcester, Mass.-based Shields Health Care. It will offer same-day services including colonoscopy, endoscopy and orthopedic procedures.
