Here’s what you should know:
1. If Duke Health’s certificate of need application is approved, the ASC would occupy 20 percent of a new building on the campus.
2. Duke Health expects it would spend around $32 million on construction and more than $1 million to operate the center for the first year. The system would finance the project with accumulated reserves and operating expenses.
3. With four operating rooms, the ASC would accommodate nearly 5,000 surgeries a year by 2024. It would offer general surgery, gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, otolaryngology, neuroscience, urology, vascular and plastic surgery procedures.
4. Wake County (N.C.) residents would account for about 56 percent of surgeries.
5. The ASC is needed to accommodate a growing population and demand for surgeries, Duke Health stated in the CON request. The hospital system reportedly performed 73,278 surgeries in fiscal year 2018, up 3.9 percent from 2014.
