What you should know:

1. Annapolis, Md.-based Anne Arundel agreed to combine with Larham, Md.-based Doctors Community Health System. The health systems said May 13 that they were working toward a definitive agreement.

2. What shape that agreement takes is important. An acquisition has less regulatory review, while a merger has an intense regulatory review process.

3. University of Maryland Capital Region Health System, based in Cheverly, long objected to Anne Arundel’s proposed cardiac surgery center, arguing it would lure patients from its own new cardiac unit. The system dropped its opposition last month.

4. A University of Maryland Capital Region Health spokesperson said the system would “continue to focus on providing high-quality care to the communities” the center serves in response to the possibly combined health systems.
