The overall shortage of physicians in the U.S. could reach 124,000 by 2034, according to Physician Thrive’s 2023 compensation report

Here’s the projected shortage of physicians by specialty through 2025:

  • Primary care: 17,800-48,000
  • Medical specialists: 16,800
  • Surgery 13,900
  • Other (including nurse practitioners): 26,400
  • Hospitalists: 1,900
