From new implant procedures to notable achievements in robotics, here are five recent surgical ‘firsts’ taking place in the ASC industry in the last four months, as reported by Becker’s:
1. Portland-based Oath Surgical performed the first Genio sleep apnea implant procedure in Oregon and the first in the Pacific Northwest to take place in an ASC setting. The procedure was performed by Andrew Patel, MD, a head and neck surgeon at Oath Surgical’s downtown Portland facility.
2. Zane Uhland, DO, an orthopedic surgeon and ASC owner in Oklahoma City, completed the first clinical cases with the Lantern ASC System developed by OrthAlign. Dr. Uhland completed six total knee procedures in an outpatient setting in less than four hours with the system.
3. Kenneth Chakour, MD, of Geneva, Ill.-based Fox Valley Orthopedics became the first surgeon in the world to perform a total hip replacement at an ASC using the latest generation of Velys hip navigation technology.
4. Tulsa-based Oklahoma Heart Institute became the first facility in the U.S. to use the Supira percutaneous left ventricular assist device as part of the SUPPORT II research trial. Cardiologists Kamran Muhammad, MD, and Robert Smith, MD, led the team that performed in the procedure.
5. Safa Kassab, MD, of Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-based Orthopedic Specialists of Oakland County, performed the first total knee replacement in the U.S. using Pixee Medical’s Knee+ NexSight augmented reality glasses.
