As a shortage of physicians persists across the U.S. and physician satisfaction buckles under increased administrative burdens and other job pressure, some leaders find that physicians are less present in healthcare leadership roles. 

The share of physicians who are self-employed has been in steady decline over the last decade as more independent practices consolidate into larger health systems or national management companies.

Physician assistants in Alabama earned the lowest average salary in 2023, at $113,212 annually, according to a Feb. 24 report from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. 

Physician pay cuts are plaguing the industry – reimbursement per Medicare patient dropped approximately 2.3% between 2005 and 2021 when adjusted for inflation, according to a study from the Harvey L. Neiman Health Policy Institute. 

Physician assistants in California earned the highest average salary in 2023, reaching $143,074 — a notable 11.5% increase since 2019, according to a Feb. 24 report from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
