American Surgical Association taps new president

The American Surgical Association has named B. Mark Evers, MD, as president-elect. 

According to an April 27 news release, Dr. Evers will serve as president-elect in 2026-27 before assuming the presidency in 2027-28. He was elected at the organization’s 146th annual meeting in Seattle this April.

He serves as director of the Lexington-based University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center and professor of surgery and the McDowell Cancer Foundation Endowed Chair in the UK College of Medicine. He has led the cancer center since 2009, during which it earned National Cancer Institute designation in 2013 and achieved Comprehensive Cancer Center status in 2023, a designation held by only 57 cancer centers nationwide.

Dr. Evers has published more than 450 peer-reviewed papers, book chapters and reviews. His laboratory has been funded continuously by the National Institutes of Health for more than 30 years, focusing on colorectal cancer research.

He is a past president of the Society of University Surgeons and the Southern Surgical Association and previously served as treasurer of the American Surgical Association.
