20% of physicians plan to decrease clinical work hours: 4 key points

An American Medical Association report found 20 percent of physicians plan to reduce clinical work hours in the next year.

Here are four key points:

1. Nearly one in 50 of physician respondents said they planned to leave medicine for a different career in the next two years.

2. Burnout is the primary factor driving physicians to leave medicine within the next two years.

3. The report found if 30 percent of physicians follow through and leave their profession in that timeframe, nearly 4,759 physicians would exit the workforce.

4.Study authors note it will cost nearly $800,000-plus to replace one physician.
