President Donald Trump selected Don Wright, MD, as HHS secretary following the resignation of Tom Price, MD, according to USA Today.
Here's what you should know about Dr. Wright:
1. A family medicine physician, Dr. Wright's career with HHS has spanned a decade.
2. He has served as HHS acting assistant secretary since February.
3. Since January 2012, Dr. Wright has been the deputy assistant secretary of health and director of the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion. In his director role, Dr. Sight oversees the department's policy development for public health and prevention activities.
4. President George W. Bush appointed Dr. Weight to serve as the alternate U.S. delegate to the World Health Organization Executive Board during his presidency.
5. After earning his medical degree from Austin-based University of Texas, Dr. Wright completed his family medicine training at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. Dr. Wright also has a master's degree in public health from Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee.
6. Dr. Price resigned from his post after news surfaced on his usage of private jets for various trips. In a letter, Dr. Price states, "I have spent forty years both as a doctor and public servant putting people first. I regret that the recent events have created a distraction from these important objectives."
