HHS secretary Dr. Tom Price resigns: 4 things to know today

Orthopedic surgeon and HHS Secretary Tom Price, MD, resigned from office following news that he used private jets for both official and personal business, Kaiser Health News reports.

Here are four things to know:

1. On Sept. 19, Politico reported Dr. Price used private jets for various trips. These trips far exceeded that of commercial flights by tens of thousands of dollars, KHN reports. Dr. Price did vow to repay a portion of the $400,000 that he accrued from those flights.

2. In a letter, Dr. Price states, "I have spent forty years both as a doctor and public servant putting people first. I regret that the recent events have created a distraction from these important objectives."

3. President Donald Trump named Don Wright, MD, a family medicine physician, to succeed Dr. Price as HHS secretary.

4. Serving as HHS' acting assistant secretary since February, Dr. Wright's career with HHS has spanned 10 years.
