Should OR hours be capped? Physicians, nurses weigh in

Physicians and nurses differ on whether surgeons and other healthcare professionals working in the operating room should have their hours capped, according to a Medscape poll.

A total of 3,220 people responded to the survey, which ran July 2018.

Here are the key details to know:

1. Responding to a question regarding whether surgeons' OR hours be capped, 57 percent of physicians and 87 percent of nurses said yes, while 10 percent of physicians and 9 percent of nurses were unsure.

2. Over 80 percent of nurses and 62 percent of physicians said nurses and anesthesiologists should have their OR hours capped.

3. When asked about whether surgeons should be monitored for impairment and other negative behaviors such as substance abuse, 82 percent of nurses and 62 percent of physicians said yes.

4. Anesthesiologists and nurses should also be monitored for negative behaviors and impairment, said 82 percent of nurses and 64 percent of physicians.
