Ophthalmologist Lindsay Rhodes, MD, received a five-year, $3.5 million grant to study telehealth strategies for glaucoma treatment.

1. Dr. Rhodes said the research aims to expand access to care to at-risk and vulnerable populations.

2. Dr. Rhodes will use the grant to support the development, implementation and evaluation of telemedicine-based detection and management strategies for glaucoma.

3.She hopes to roll out the solution in Alabama's Black Belt region. The region does not have adequate access to ophthalmology care, she said, with few optometrists and no ophthalmologists who specialize in glaucoma.
