What ulcerative colitis patients most want to know from their physicians: 5 key notes

Patients with ulcerative colitis are more concerned about complications that arise from UC than the side-affects of their medications, according to a study published in Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Here are five key notes:

1. Researchers sent a web-based survey to UC patients throughout the United States and Australia. A total of 460 patients responded.

2. Most patients (87 percent) wanted to share treatment decision making with their physicians.

3. Ninety-eight percent wanted more than just a basic understanding of their disease.

4. Patients were most concerned about the risk of colorectal cancer (37 percent), and the possible need for an ileostomy (29 percent).

5. Only 14 percent of patients indicated that side effects from medications were their biggest concern.
