What is the optimal bowel preparation for colonoscopy?

A recent study published in The American Journal of Gastroenterology compared polyethylene glycol to Miralax and Gatorade as colonoscopy bowel preparation regimens. Here are four things to know about the study.

•    The researchers set out to compare polyethylene glycol, which due to its large volume may result in suboptimal patient compliance, to the combination of Miralax and Gatorade, which has a lower volume and more palatable process.
•    The researchers found the Miralax and Gatorade resulted in statistically fewer satisfactory bowel preparations in comparison to PEG but resulted in more patient willingness to repeat the preparation process.
•    There was no significant difference between polyp detection or side effects in the two different preparation groups.
•    Miralax and Gatorade demonstrated no significant improvement in side effects of polyp detection.researchers concluded that PEG appears to be the superior bowel preparation option.
