Volume Threshold for Bariatric Surgery Centers of Excellence Not Evidence-Based, Study Says

Although higher patient volumes are associated with better outcomes for bariatric surgery patients, data do not indicate a specific volume that would differentiate between bariatric surgery centers of excellence and other hospitals, according to a study by the Journal of the American College of Surgeons.

Researchers conducted a study to evaluate whether the volume requirement of 125 procedures a year for accreditation of bariatric surgery centers of excellence can be justified by differences in outcomes.
