Superbug infections caused by medical scope shed light on regulatory issues: 5 observations

The duodenoscope has caused more superbug infections than earlier reported, based on a U.S. Senate health committee report, according to SFGate. The duodenoscope is used for pancreas and bile duct conditions.

Here are five observations:

1. The report revealed 25 antibiotic-resistant infections at 19 U.S. hospitals and six European hospitals.

2. From 2012 to 2015, 250 patients experienced superbug infections in connection with the duodenoscope.

3. Sen. Patty Murray (D-Washington) led the investigation and found issue with federal government oversight of the duodenoscope failures.

4. The investigation also found hospital delays in reporting problems with the device.

5. The report hopes to call attention to regulatory issues.
