Ulcerative colitis, an inflammation of the lining of the colon, can trigger inflammatory bowel disease. The study, by UCSD researchers and published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, said IL-37 works the same in both mice and humans.

The mice drank water containing dextran sulfate sodium, a substance that induces colitis, to see whether IL-37 provided protection from intestinal inflammation.
