Study: Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding Can be Performed Safely in Outpatient Setting

Chris Cobourn, MD, of the Surgical Weight Loss Centre in Mississauga, Ontario, has found that laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding surgery can be performed in outpatient facility in a group of patients with a high risk for sleep apnea, a news release said.

The study analyzed 2,370 patients who had the surgery between 2005 and 2009. Of those, 746 patients had been identified as having a high risk for sleep apnea. The rate of complications in those patients was less than 0.5 percent and none of the complications required hospitalization.
