The study, in the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, found that IV fluids were more beneficial than oral fluids, because the patients were vomiting and having frequent bouts of diarrhea and could not keep the water down.

Washington University researchers performing the study said IV fluids appear to help protect the kidney and could possibly help these patients avoid dialysis.
