Study: Intestinal Ecosystem More Dynamic Than Thought

Two studies from the University of Texas Southwest reveal new discoveries about how the intestinal system functions, according to a university news release.

The first study found the polio virus uses the body’s natural gut bacteria in order to become more infectious. The second study found an antibiotic protein keeps the 100 trillion gut bacteria from causing digestive problems. The protein creates a “demilitarized zone” in the mucus layers that covers the inner surface of the intestines.
