Researchers used a prospective, randomized controlled trial with 71 patients who presented signs of GI bleeding. Patients received either standard treatment with hospital management or capsule endoscopy.

Here’s what you should know.

1. Of the 71 patients, 37 received capsule endoscopy and 34 received standard treatment.

2. Of the patients, seven of the capsule endoscopy patients were admitted to the hospital compared to all 34 of the patients that received standard treatment.

3. There was no difference in terms of recurrent bleeding or 30-day mortality.

4. The researchers concluded that capsule endoscopy is a safe and effective way to treat triaging patients with signs of upper GI bleeding, not requiring hospital admission.
