PPI is 3rd most-prescribed drug in the U.S.

From July 2013 to June 2014, the proton pump inhibitor Nexium was the third most-prescribed drug in the United States, according to a Medscape report.

During the data period, approximately 18.6 million Nexium prescriptions were written. Nexium came close on the heels of hypothyroidism drug levothyroxine (22.6 million prescriptions) and cholesterol-lowering drug Crestor (22.5 million prescriptions).

Nexium netted $6.3 billion in sales, tied with Humira for the second top-selling drug during the data period. Notably, hepatitis C drug Sovaldi generated $4.4 billion in sales.
