Ohio Gastroenterologist Pushes for Required Coverage of Colon Cancer Screening

While many insurers provide coverage for screening colonoscopies, not all do. Akron, Ohio, gastroenterologist Costas Kefalas, MD, is leading a charge to change that, according to a story in the Akron Beacon Journal.

Dr. Kefalas, chair of the founding governing board of the Ohio Gasterenterology Society and a governor for the northern Ohio region of the American College of Gastroenterology, recently testified before the Ohio House of Representatives in favor of a measure to require insurance coverage for colorectal cancer screening tests. Some 26 other states have passed laws requiring insurers to cover colon cancer screenings, Dr. Kefalas told the Beacon Journal.

The measure he supports is based on the recommendations of the American Cancer Society. The Ohio Association of Health Plans, however, is pushing Ohio lawmakers to use screening recommendations from the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force.
