Elizabeth City, N.C.-based Northside Park Gastroenterology and Endoscopy Center owner Michael Sue, MD, announced his intent to retire after almost 30 years in medicine, DailyAdvance.com reports.

Here’s what you should know:

1. Dr. Sue is retiring because of age. The 65-year-old physician was recruited to the area in 1996, opening his practice soon thereafter. His retirement will leave only one other gastroenterologist in the area.

2. Elizabeth City-based Sentara Albemarle Medical Center recently enlisted a recruiting firm to bring a second gastroenterologist to the area.

3. Dr. Sue reflected on his career with DailyAdvance.com. He felt he improved people’s lives and that patients were satisfied with his care.

4. Dr. Sue earned his medical degree from Kingston, Jamaica-based University of West Indies. He completed an internship, residency and fellowship at Charlottesville-based University of Virginia.
