New York State penalizes payer $25k for anesthesia charges associated with colonoscopy

New York State has penalized Emblem Health $25,000 for incorrectly processing claims, which led to patients being charged for anesthesia when undergoing a colonoscopy, according to a Syracuse report.

Under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, anesthesia is to be 100 percent covered for patients undergoing preventative colonoscopies. Emblem incorrectly processed 255 claims, according to the report.

Under the agreement with the Attorney General's office, the payer will also refund approximately $400,000 to the affected patients.
