The new guidelines call for a colonoscopy every ten years beginning at age 50, as opposed to the currently-endorsed "menu of options" approach.
African Americans are recommended to begin screening at age 45.
The ACG notes that for patients who refuse a colonoscopy or in areas where colonoscopy is unavailable, other cancer prevention tests should be used every five years.
