Reza Shaker, MD, the chief of gastroenterology and hepatology at MCW, developed the device, called the Reza-Band. It is a band designed to be worn around the neck, and applies pressure to the upper esophageal sphincter to prevent stomach acid from rising into the throat.

The device will be licensed to start-up Somna Therapeutics, a company co-founded by Mr. Shaker. Somna expects to have the band in clinical trials by this fall.
