Mr. Tanner and Mr. Poisson’s keys to success involved six areas, including patient safety and quality, revenue cycle optimization, expense reduction maximization, physician recruitment, marketplace positioning and good citizenship.

Each area should be regularly monitored for optimal success.

“Understand your market,” Mr. Tanner says, “and consider where you want to be. It’s all about strategy. Look at future opportunities and position yourself to take advantage of those opportunities.”

They recommend creating a culture of quality and experience among employees and reinforcing it continuously. Benchmarks are also critical for maintaining safety and quality comparatively.

The cost per procedure should also be a focus for endoscopic ambulatory surgery centers, and centers should be aware of all of their costs. Knowing your costs will also continue to be more critical in the future as reimbursements evolve.

A current challenge for EASCs is recruiting physicians, as many physicians are looking for secure environments and choosing to work in hospitals. Always be recruiting physicians, they say, even if you’ve just hired a physician.

Good citizenship, including charitable care and reduced compensation care, also helps establish your EASC as a caring component of the local community. They recommend dedicating weekly schedule time for charity care.
