Joint Research Team Discovers New Method for Developing Anti-Diarrheal Drugs

Researchers from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and Trinity College Dublin have discovered a new method for the development of anti-diarrheal drugs, according to a MedicalXpress report.

The researchers discovered that the protein Farnesoid X Receptor in intestinal tissue can stop movement of water into the gut. Drugs that act on this protein can prevent water movement, thereby preventing diarrhea.

The research was published in the international gastroenterology journal Gut.
