Researchers examined asymptomatic average-risk patients more than 50 years old who had a screening colonoscopy either directly or as a follow-up to a positive FIT test. They compared adenoma detection rate, advanced ADR and overall ADR between the two screening methods. A total of 2,901 underwent a direct screening colonoscopy and 2,485 underwent a FITC.
What they found:
1. Overall ADR, male-specific ADR, female-specific-ADR and overall AADR were higher in the FITC group than the DSC group.
2. The differences remained after researchers adjusted for patient characteristics.
Researchers concluded, “Results from this international multicenter cohort study provide early evidence that newly proposed higher ADR targets are justified as quality indicators for FITC.”
