Dr. Shaheen has a professional interest in Barrett’s esophagus, reflux disease and esophageal cancer. His research interests center on the epidemiology and management of esophageal diseases. He is currently on the editorial board of Gastroenterology and Clinical Gastroenterology & Hepatology, and is a reviewer for numerous journals such as Gut and American Journal of Medicine. He has received research funding from the National Institutes of Health, multiple private foundations and corporations.
Dr. Shaheen earned his medical degree at the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine, where he also completed his residency. He completed his clinical GI fellowship training at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed a National Institutes of Health fellowship in epidemiology.
