Nicholas J. Shaheen, MD, MPH, is chief of the division of gastroenterology and hepatology and director of the Center for Esophageal Diseases and Swallowing at UNC Health Care, based in Chapel Hill, N.C. He is also a professor of medicine and epidemiology. He is the president of the North Carolina Society of Gastroenterology. He is also a fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology and American Gastroenterological Association, where he serves as vice-chair of the Clinical Practice section of the AGA.
Dr. Shaheen has a professional interest in Barrett's esophagus, reflux disease and esophageal cancer. His research interests center on the epidemiology and management of esophageal diseases. He is currently on the editorial board of Gastroenterology and Clinical Gastroenterology & Hepatology, and is a reviewer for numerous journals such as Gut and American Journal of Medicine. He has received research funding from the National Institutes of Health, multiple private foundations and corporations.
Dr. Shaheen earned his medical degree at the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine, where he also completed his residency. He completed his clinical GI fellowship training at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed a National Institutes of Health fellowship in epidemiology.
