GI physician leader to know: Dr. Mark Pimentel of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center

Mark Pimentel, MD, FRCPC, is the director of the gastrointestinal motility program and laboratory at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he also serves as an associate professor of medicine. The Cedars-Sinai GI Motility Program has grown under Sr. Pimentel’s leadership to become one of the largest in the western United States. He is a member of American Gastroenterological Association, American College of Gastroenterology and American Motility Society.

Dr. Pimentel has an active interest in research and has served as a principal investigator or co-investigator for numerous clinical studies. His current investigations include small intestinal bacterial overgrowth in irritable bowel syndrome as well as acute gastroenteritis models of post-infectious IBS and bacterial overgrowth. He also studies gut microbe GI Motility interactions. His work has been published in a number of professional journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, Annals of Internal Medicine and American Journal of Physiology.

Dr. Pimentel earned his medical degree at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada. He completed his residency at the University of Manitoba Health Science Center and his fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of California, Los Angeles Integrated Training Program.
