GI physician leader to know: Dr. Joel Weinstock of Tufts Medical Center

Joel V. Weinstock, MD, is the chief of the division of gastroenterology/hepatology at Tufts Medical Center and a professor at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston. He is board-certified by the internal medicine and gastroenterology.

Dr. Weinstock’s professional interests includes inflammatory bowel diseases, mucosal immunity, general gastroenterology, GI bleeding and endoscopy. He is actively involved in research, and his interests center on the study of helminths and how they can be used to relieve inflammatory bowel disease symptoms. He has been awarded ‘top doctor’ awards by Boston Magazine and U.S. News & World Report.

Dr. Weinstock coined the term “hygiene hypothesis,” the theory that a recent, drastic increase in IBD cases and other immune-mediated diseases is a direct result of western society killing off beneficial intestinal parasites and bacteria.  

Dr. Weinstock earned his medical degree at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit. He completed his residency and fellowship at University Hospital in Ann Arbor, Mich.
