GI physician leader to know: Dr. Ira Flax of Digestive and Liver Specialists

Ira L. Flax, MD, is a managing partner of Digestive and Liver Specialists in Houston. He co-founded and served as chairman of the Texas Alliance for Digestive Diseases, a regional gastroenterology independent practice association. He also previously served as president of the Harris County Medical Society, Western Branch and as chief of staff of Memorial Hospital in Memorial City.

Dr. Flax is a fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology and a member of the American Gastroenterological Association and American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. He has previously served on the board of trustees of the ACG for six years and chaired a number of its committees.

Dr. Flax has a professional interest in gastroesophageal reflux disease, colon cancer, gallstones, hemochromatosis, hepatitis C, irritable bowel syndrome and ulcerative colitis.

Dr. Flax earned his medical degree at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond and completed his internal medicine residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He completed his fellowship in gastroenterology at Medical College of Virginia.
